Can the EU become a global leader in battery production and use?

Our auditors have put EU’s industrial policy on batteries to the test.

With the number of e-vehicles growing quickly and the sale of new cars and vans using CO₂-emitting combustion engines likely to be banned by 2035, batteries are a strategic imperative for the EU. 

On 19 June, five years after the adoption of the 2018 action plan to make the EU a global leader in sustainable battery production and use, the ECA will publish a highly anticipated audit report assessing the relevance and efficiency of the EU’s industrial policy on batteries. (Read more)

The EU's fight against climate change – a success story?

Climate protection has been a focus of our auditors for a long time. Their next report on the matter is imminent.

Empty water reservoirs, parched soil, increased risk of wildfires: in spring 2023, parts of southern Europe suffered from severe drought. The effects of climate change are becoming more and more obvious. In response, the EU has set itself increasingly ambitious climate and energy targets. But can these targets really be met? WORK IN PROGRESS

EU defence spending in the ECA’s sights

For the first time, our auditors dealt with military issues. And there is more to come.

Adaptive camouflage, bullet-proof vests, laser systems: these were some of the projects funded as the EU used its common budget, for the first time in history, to support research and development in the defence industry. Our auditors found that expectations were only partially met. (Read more)
