On Monday 16 January, the European Court of Auditors (ECA) will publish a review of EU actions to address the increasing amount of hazardous waste.
ABOUT THE TOPIC
Hazardous waste is being produced in larger quantities than ever before. This poses multiple threats to human health and the environment. It is therefore timely to review the EU's management of hazardous waste.
This review provides an overview of the EU's role and actions to tackle hazardous waste, and of the challenges and opportunities arising from its prevention and treatment. The auditors covered the period from 2004, when data on hazardous waste became available at EU level, until September 2022. They identified key future challenges for the EU in dealing with hazardous waste.
The publication of this review at the beginning of 2023 provides an opportunity for the European Parliament and the Council to include it in their current debate on the update of relevant legislation, such as the Waste Shipment Regulation and the Directive on the protection of the environment through criminal law. The Commission could also take it into account in its future reviews of the Waste Framework Directive.
