On Monday 31 January, the European Court of Auditors (ECA) will publish a review assessing how energy taxes, carbon pricing and energy subsidies contribute to achieving the EU’s climate goals.
ABOUT THE REVIEW
The auditors reviewed the relevant EU legislation, in particular the Energy Taxation Directive and the existing Emissions Trading System, as well as the recent European Commission’s proposal for their update. The auditors analysed current energy taxation levels in the Member States and carbon pricing instruments, as well as energy subsidies, and looked at how these incentivise climate action.
ABOUT THE TOPIC
Energy taxation is a tool that governments can use not only to raise revenue but also to support climate objectives. It can reflect the impact energy products have on the environment, and can encourage businesses to make greener choices. However, the European Union faces several challenges in revising the legislation to fulfil its green ambitions, in particular when reconciling climate objectives with social needs.
