AFCO’s concern with the institutional aspects of the European integration process and our own work on EU financial governance may be seen as complementary.

As the EU’s auditors, we also look ahead in order to help address the key challenges facing the EU in future. The increased transparency of government performance made possible by the proliferation of online media, coupled with the innovation and better value for money people see in other areas of their lives, continue to raise expectations of public services. The rising expectation of openness from governments and the EU is particularly challenging given the perceived distance between the institutions and citizens.

We will keep all these factors in mind when selecting our audit tasks and formulating recommendations for the future.
