On Thursday 24 September, the European Court of Auditors (ECA) will publish a review on how the EU took account of lessons learned from the 2008 – 2012 financial and sovereign debt crises
ABOUT THE REVIEW
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an economic shock, which is still unfolding. Sound recovery will depend on learning lessons from the last crisis and being aware of the weaknesses observed. A decade after the financial and sovereign debt crises, the auditors take stock of EU responses. They will provide a summary of key measures the EU took, the progress it achieved, remaining challenges, potential risks or policy gaps, and information on first responses to the COVID-19 crisis.
A review presents and establishes the facts surrounding a specific issue; it is not an audit. This review draws on relevant results from previous audits, international benchmarking, analysis of publicly available information and academic research, as well as consultations with stakeholders and experts in the field.
