On Monday 30 May, the European Court of Auditors (ECA) will publish a special report on climate spending in the 2014-2020 EU budget.
ABOUT THE TOPIC
Climate mainstreaming is high on the international and EU political agenda. Climate spending and reporting is a crosscutting issue covering a significant share of the EU budget: the EU committed to spending at least 20% of its 2014-2020 budget on climate action: action aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing the use of renewables, and improving energy efficiency. The European Commission announced that the EU met this target, reporting €216 billion in climate spending in this period.
ABOUT THE AUDIT
The audit examines whether the Commission reported relevant and reliable climate-spending information for 2014-2020. The audit report will help the Commission improve the relevance and reliability of its climate reporting during the 2021-2027 programme period; its findings and recommendations will be useful in the context of the EU’s objective of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
FOR PRESS
The ECA press office will hold a virtual briefing on Monday 30 May. Journalists who wish to participate should contact press@eca.europa.eu for details.
The report and press release will be published on the ECA website eca.europa.eu at 5.00 p.m. CET on Monday 30 May.
The ECA member responsible for this report is Joëlle Elvinger.
The ECA’s special reports set out the results of its audits of EU policies and programmes or management topics related to specific budgetary areas. The ECA selects and designs these audit tasks to be of maximum impact by considering the risks to performance or compliance, the level of income or spending involved, forthcoming developments and political and public interest.
